Islam is the state religion, all the inhabitants are Sunni Muslims. The Maldivians comply with the pillars of Islam, the five daily prayers, fasting during Ramadan, when possible, the pilgrimage to Mecca and the gift of charity. Nevertheless, the Maldivian version of Islam is often very liberal. Although men and women pray in separate mosques, but the women are not forced to wear the veil, and equal rights in terms of education, training, employment and property. Even the Islamic law of Sharia judges interpret the surprisingly mild way - so have criminals more likely to be banned in one of the many remote islands, instead of being executed. For the Maldives, but this punishment is not nearly as easy, it means separation from family and public shame - at least it seems to work, there is hardly a repeat offender and the crime rate is negligible.
